As I've said, we are totally thrilled with how Karate is going with Jake. They do a lot of character building alongside the physical skills. They can do a belt test to get to the next belt level every few months. The physical skills are "tested" the day of (at this stage, it's basically watch and repeat), but behavior has to be signed off on by us, by his teacher, and by the karate instructor. There are requirements he has to meet on all fronts before being eligible for the belt test. Examples are consistently listening the first time, using manners, not using karate in anger, putting away personal belongings, cleaning up after self at meals, etc...
Jake has taken this seriously and it has given a boost to things we're already working on with him. It never hurts to have other incentives to do the right thing when you have a little one who is learning responsibility and accountability.
